Course Summary

The overall goal of the SMB Solutions course is to provide training to support the SMB solution packages MetaSwitch will be delivering. Target audience are people planning, installing or supporting the MetaSwitch SMB solution. The course will go into sufficient detail for the users to understand how each component is individually configured and how the integrated whole functions.

Prerequisite Knowledge

Attendance of the MetaSwitch System Overview course (or equivalent MetaSwitch-specific experience) is highly recommended before attending this course.

Note: The course depends on each student being able to access the MetaSwitch Portal using an individual username and password. Please be sure you have a username/password to access the portal prior to attending class. You can get the required information from your CSE or account manager.

Daily schedule

This course is a 3-day course with class hours running 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. The schedule for the last day includes time for individual exercises and troubleshooting to create some flexibility in planning your return flights home.

Check the course schedule to see what dates are scheduled for future courses.

Course content

The course is split into the following modules.

  • M1 Introduction and Course Objectives
This module gives an overview of the challenges service providers have delivering VoIP services to SMBs and outlines two technical applications used to deliver services that meet these challenges.

  • M2 Features for IP PBX Services
The CLASS services that are available to Hosted IP PBX lines are detailed. The services examined include: Simulated Facility Groups, Intercom Dialing, Distinctive Ringing for incoming calls, Multiple Appearance Directory Numbers (MADNs), Call Pickup Groups, Call Parking, Call Transfers, Line State Monitoring, Multi-Line Hunt Groups and Incoming Call Queuing.

  • M3 Features for IP Business Trunking Services
This module examines the CLASS features available on the MetaSwitch that are available to subscribers using IP Business Trunking services.

  • M4 Applications
The overall capabilities of CommPortal, Unified Messaging, Auto Attendant, Music On Hold and Conferencing are detailed. These services may be offered with the Hosted IP PBX Services and some are applicable to IP Business Trunking.

  • M5 Hosted IP PBX Overview
The architecture used to deliver Hosted IP PBX services is detailed and the individual components and their configurations are also examined.

  • M6 IP Network Design for Hosted IP PBX
IP networks must be architected to support the low latency, low jitter and low packet loss required for VoIP. This module reviews the design criteria for constructing high quality VoIP networks.

  • M7 Session Border Controllers
In addition to NAT traversal, Session Border Controllers are critical to protecting the VoIP network. This module reviews the function and configuration of the Ditech and Acme Packet Session Border Controllers to support the Hosted IP PBX solution.

  • M8 SIP Phones
SIP phones are a key component of the Hosted IP PBX solution. This module reviews the features, functions and configuration of the Aastra, Polycom and SNOM SIP phones.

  • M9 SIP Provisioning Server
The support of a diverse network of SIP devices presents challenges for the upgrade, provisioning, maintenance and upgrade of endpoints. The SIP Provisioning Server provides a single point to manage and control adds, moves and changes of networks comprised of diverse SIP endpoints.

  • M10 Analog Telephone Adapters
Some devices within a Hosted IP PBX network (like fax machines) are best served with traditional POTS services. This module reviews the function, configuration and role of ATAs (Analog Telephone Adapters).

  • M11 IP Business Trunking
The architecture used to leverage an IP infrastructure to deliver services to customer hosted Key Systems and PBXs is detailed. This service, sometimes marketed as a "Flex-T1", offers a method for Service Providers to deliver differentiated services while accommodating legacy customer premises equipment. Security, Quality of Service (QoS) and service outage scenarios are also examined.

  • M12 Session Border Controllers
Session Border Controllers can be a necessary component for IP Business Trunking. The role and configuration of Ditech and Acme Packet SBCs is examined for this service delivery model.

  • M13 Integrated Access Devices
Integrated Access Devices (IADs) convert the VoIP signaling from the MetaSwitch into ISDN-PRI, T1, or POTS lines for connection to the customer owned PBX or Key System. This module reviews the function, configuration and options available with the Adtran TA900 or Cisco 243x IADs.
